Five Things I Have Worn my Face Mask For (Which Aren’t Related to Covid)

With the relaxation of Face Mask wearing in effect across the UK we thought we'd share some ways in which you can still make use of wearing your face mask that have nothing to do with viruses.

  1. Emptying the cats’ litter tray
Let’s get the ickiest one out of the way first, shall we?
I’m sure anyone who has ever spent time around animals is aware that everyone’s least favourite job is cleaning up their mess, and as much as I love my cats – my goodness they can create a stink at times! Thankfully, I’ve found that wearing my face mask blocks out nearly all of the smell so it’s now a lot less odorous.

  1. DIY
Before I go any further with this one, I do feel the need to point out that our cotton face masks have not undergone any of the stringent safety tests which masks sold for DIY use have, so please do not take this as advice to change from using a properly tested mask if you are the sensible kind of person who always wears one.
However, I’ve not really ever been the best at wearing a mask in a non-work situation. Having cotton face masks to hand has changed that and whilst I know – as per the caveats above – that they’re not as good as a proper mask, they’re a lot better than no mask at all!

  1. Gardening
Even if, like me, you regularly wear s safety specs for pretty much any kind of gardening you might be wondering: isn’t it a little over the top to wear a face mask as well?
It does a brilliant job of preventing flies from getting in your mouth or up your nose!

  1. Cleaning out the chickens
After my comments about the cats’ litter tray, you might assume this is again to do with the mask cutting out the smell of this job. It does help with that, but perhaps even more useful is the way the mask filters out a lot of the dust from the wood shavings we use as bedding for our hens so I don’t end up with a nose full of dust.
  1. Keeping warm on a cold day
I think most of the UK came to the conclusion that face masks are useful on a cold day. I love wrapping a big woollen scarf around me on a cold winter’s day, but unlike a scarf, a face mask doesn’t go all around the back of your head so doesn’t interfere with your hat or make your neck too warm. Honestly? I wish I’d had one years ago!
